MTSSR came into being in 1985 and aviation training continued under the Mechanical Department, until an independent Aircraft Department formed in August 1986. Two years later Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) mechanics also joined the aircraft training program that catered for Boeing 757 and 767 airframe and engine technicians,
A purpose built aircraft training hangar was opened in 1990 to house the Aircraft Section. The Avionics Specialty course was introduced for RBAF technicians in 1992 and for RBA mechanics in 1997. Aircraft Section was upgraded to a department in 1996 and is currently offering courses for RBAF and RBA in the specialties of airframe/engine and avionics.
Future courses in the planning to be introduced for Aircraft Department are Pre-national and National Diploma programs in Military System Engineering and JAR 66 Short Courses.
